Baseline Testing – Jr Vikes Concussion Protocol

Baseline testing will be offered free of charge on August 6th at Valley View school in Lebanon Township.  Testing will start at 6:00 pm and no tests will start after 7:15 pm.  Testing will be on a fist come first served basis.  All Jr Vikes are STRONGLY encouraged to take this test.  If you took the baseline test last year as part of the Jr Vike’s program you do not need to take it again.

The Jr Vikings adopted this program in 2013 for dealing with concussions suffered by our athletes during the football season.  The Concussion Protocol will be monitored by the St. Luke’s Concussion Center at the Warren Campus in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, under the direction of Nick Avallone, M.D.  As a Board Certified Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Specialist and Head Team Physician for 4 local high schools, Dr. Avallone has additional expertise in concussion management and is a Certified ImPACT Consultant.

All athletes aged 10 and up are offered this baseline ImPACT test, free of charge, from the St. Luke’s Concussion Center.  This is a 20 minute, computerized neurocognitive test that can be used as a tool in assessing when an athlete has recovered from a concussion. The test will be given by a member of the concussion center on-site at Valley View School.  The school has generously donated its computer clusters for us to use to perform the baseline tests.  The ImPACT test is a valid test for patients aged 10 and up.  Unfortunately, no valid computerized neurocognitive test exists to date for those less than 10 years old.  For this age group, we will rely on symptom scores and serial neurologic exams to determine when it is safe to allow an athlete to return to play.

For those players who might not be able to make this screening, they can still receive the free baseline ImPACT test by contacting Ethan Hood at the St. Luke’s Warren Concussion Center at 908-859-4381.

We look forward to seeing you all at the screening on August 6th.

Go Vikes!

The Jr. Vikings program, coaches and volunteer staff are dedicated to the youth of our community. The success of our program is not measured by wins or losses, but by the sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility and the fun we experience through striving towards our goals. The Voorhees Jr. Vikings Football program is an outstanding program and is considered the "feeder program" for Voorhees High School football. We are already seeing the success of our alumni as they start their High School football careers with Voorhees. We encourage our players, parents and coaches to work as a team to insure a successful program.

The goal of our league is to provide an enjoyable, character-building program free of prejudice, criticism and allowing all the youth of our community the opportunity to learn the game of football. The success of our program will not be measured by wins or losses, but by the sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility and the fun we experience through striving towards our goals.
